Yesterday.... part two

Between our house and Oxford, MS this Tire Man stands waving to all who pass by. He is off the highway on a side road. He is about 20 feet tall and has a flagpole and floodlights. I don't know who made him , or why, but I imagine it must have been someone who was in the tire business. He is made entirely of a metal frame and old tires of various sizes. He has been standing there waving as long as I can remember, but this is the first time I have turned off the highway to see him up close.

Not only did we see pretty Lilies, and the Tire Man, but we also saw........

a spotted Horse..............

.........and even some Goats that were grazing near the Tire Man!

Lily Land

We went to Oxford, MS yesterday, and when we finished our mission it was time for lunch. We stopped at the Mexican Restaurant and were greeted by this big bed of lilies. I going to depend on Darla, or so other flower expert out there, to tell me about these. There were so many pretty colors! They grew on stems that were two or three feet tall and then had a whole bouquet of flowers at the top. The flowers didn't droop, as some lilies, but faced up to the sun. Any help identifing these would be appreciated.

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. (Matt. 6:28-29)

Miscellany

Maybe you already know that I like to photograph old barns. Someone told me about one that is not far from our house. I have been itching to go by and try to find it, so today was the day. It's old and quite unique. It has lattice work in the open area between the two sections of the roof.

While visiting my sister this afternoon, we watched her Squirrels playing in their big tree. They chased each other round and round and then one of them walked the wire down to their roof.

This Rabbit was an afternoon visitor to our yard. I managed to get a few pictures before he ran under our storage building, which is near the woods. A little half grown Rabbit was in our garage one afternoon. He finally came out and went flying across the yard!

I looked toward the South yesterday afternoon and saw this beautiful thunderhead. We have really had lots of rain lately. What we had today was just a few showers.

Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt His name together. Psalm 34:3 (NIV)

A to Z on Mondays- Letter "T"

Last summer I must have made a zillion pictures of butterflies! I actually learned the names of some of them. I have much more to learn and I hope to get to make many more pictures of them this summer. I found out that they like Zinnias and I have planted more of them as well as a few other plants like Lantana. I think the correct name for this butterfly in Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, but humor me and let me get by with this one. ☺

Our Yard Friday

Happy Memorial Day!

Memorial Day Weekend--Isn't this the weekend you are supposed to have a cookout, kick back and be lazy, or maybe go to the lake on a picnic??? Ours has been a working weekend instead. I've been working on a new flower bed and Jeep has been working to re-install the whole house in-ground water filter at a new location. The rain came about the same time that we ran out of energy. I washed the tools and then noticed that there sure were lots of different ones; some Jeep had been using and some I had used. That's my little 'lady's shovel' there by Jeep's man-sized shovel. I have really enjoyed this tool because it's just the right size for me.





We recently had some gutters added to the back of our house to take care of the rainwater. One of the downspouts came down right at the water meter and the in-ground water filter. Jeep didn't like for all this water to be dumped there, so he asked the water supplier to move the water meter and filter to another location. You know the saying, "If you want the job done right, do it yourself", or something like that. Well, Jeep wasn't happy with the water filter. I could write a page or two about all of his work digging the hole deeper, breaking fittings, trips to town for parts, bloodshed, big bandaids, sweat, pain and exhaustion, that were brought about by Jeep getting the water filter installed in a satisfactory manner. Now all he lacks is building the box that goes around it and a top for the box. Say a prayer that all goes well and it doesn't have to be dug up again!

Last year I made a new flower bed about 24 inches wide and 3o or more feet long. I had to shovel and remove sod because there had never been a flower bed there. It was back-breaking work for an old woman, but I was generously rewarded by the flowers that bloomed in the new bed last summer. I know you must have gotten tired of seeing the many pictures of Butterflies and Zinnias that I posted here!! This year I decided to widen the bed by about 18 inches. My grandson came over and helped build a little brick border which took in the 18 inches of new area. Afterusing the shovel to dig about 8 inches deep, I removed all the grass and roots, by hand, and then added some sand (to improve the texture of the soil) and two big bags of Miracle Grow potting soil. Then I had to turn all that over with the shovel to mix it! I can't wait for the rain to stop so I can get out there and plant some more flowers!

I received a gorgeous hanging basket of an unusual peachy colored Verbena, shown in the picture above. It was so beautiful when it arrived, but it was planted in a potting medium that didn't hold as much water as it needed.

I took it out of the basket and planted it directly in the new bed. I think it will be happy there and I think it will return year after year. You can see a bit of it on the far right in the picture below.

What is the name of this little plant? I think it is an annual, but can't remember the name. Two of these and two white and green ones were in a mixed pot of flowers I received for Mother'a day. They were not happy in the pot so I decided to take them out and plant them in my new flower bed.

The Hot Pink Wave Petunias are coming along nicely. I fixed two long planters of these and have them on the low sitting wall around our back porch.

Bluebirds

I saw this pair of Bluebirds fly to the feeder twice yesterday. I have never seen them eat any seeds, but he keep a watchful eye out while she enjoyed the fresh water. This is one of my favorite birds and I'm glad to see that they have made their home here.
